Entrepreneur and investor Elon Reeve Musk FRS was born on June 28, 1971 (/iln/ EE-lon). He is the owner and CEO of Twitter, Inc., the founder of the Boring Company, the co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI, and the president of the charitable Musk Foundation. He is also the founder, CEO, and chief engineer of SpaceX, an angel investor, the CEO, and the architect of products for Tesla, Inc., as well as the CEO and owner of Twitter. an estimated nett value approximately $192 billion as of March 27, 2023, mainly from his ownership shares in Tesla and SpaceX, [4] [5] The Bloomberg Billionaires Index and Forbes' real-time billionaires list both rank Musk as the second wealthiest person in the world. [6] [7]

Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa. He briefly attended the University of Pretoria before relocating to Canada at the age of 18 and obtaining Canadian citizenship through his mother, who was born in Canada. He enrolled at Queen's University and two years later went to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned bachelor's degrees in physics and economics. In 1995, he relocated to California so that he could attend Stanford University. He quit college after two days and co-founded Zip2 with his brother Kimbal, a maker of online city guides. It was purchased by Zip2 in 1999.Musk launched X.com, a direct bank, along with Compaq for $307 million. In order to create PayPal, which eBay later purchased from X.com for $1.5 billion, Confinity and X.com merged in 2000.

SpaceX is a provider of spaceflight services that Musk founded in 2002 with $175.8 million. He invested in Tesla Motors, Inc. in 2004 as one of the company's earliest investors (now Tesla, Inc.). After being appointed CEO in 2008, he was became its chairman and product architect. He participated in the creation of SolarCity in 2006; this solar energy firm ultimately became Tesla Energy after being purchased by Tesla. He joined others in establishing nonprofit artificial intelligence research organisation OpenAI in 2015. The startup Neuralink, which develops brain-computer interfaces, and the tunnel construction firm The Boring Company were both co-founded by him the year after. Also suggested by Musk a high-speed vacuum train transit system called the hyperloop. He successfully paid $44 billion to acquire Twitter in 2022.

Musk is a divisive character who has spoken contentious things about technology and politics, notably on Twitter. In addition to propagating false information on COVID-19, he has come under fire for making unscientific and deceptive claims. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Musk in 2018 after he allegedly misrepresented in a tweet that he had money in place for a private acquisition of Tesla. As part of a settlement deal with the SEC, Musk resigned as chairman of Tesla and paid a $20 million fine.
